Lake-Effect Snow Pummels Great Lakes States
4 Storm Related Deaths, Around 140 Vehicles Stranded

Weather.com – An Arctic blast set off a major lake-effect snowstorm across the Great Lakes, dumping feet of snow on parts of western and central New York and additional snow on northwest Pennsylvania, northern Ohio, northern and western Michigan and far northern Wisconsin.

"By the time all is said and done, parts of Upstate New York could be buried in over 5 feet of new snow," said weather.com meteorologist Jonathan Erdman.

At least four storm-related deaths were reported in Buffalo, New York, Tuesday night in a statement by Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz. One person died in an automobile accident, and the three other deaths are possibly due to cardiac complications, WBFO reports.

Road closures were reported all across the region. A stretch of I-90 over 100 miles long from Rochester, New York, to the Pennsylvania State Line is shutdown due to white-out conditions. Around 140 vehicles are reportedly stranded on the road, according to Poloncarz. Snow was so heavy in some places that even snow plows were getting stuck. In West Seneca, New York, 10 of the city's 22 snow plows were reportedly stuck out on roads.

Poland Spring Truck Driver Douses House Fire By Unloading Water From His Tanker

LiveTrucking.com – Some can argue that Poland Springs uses the best water one can find in the states, not just because it tastes good, but because it saves lives as well. Literally.

A fire broke out early Tuesday morning in New Gloucester, Maine, burning away a farm house on Abbey Lane. Before firefighters could get there, a Poland Springs tanker was already on the scene.

The driver was passing by when he saw the fire and stopped.

Dozens Treated After California Waste Plant Fire
More than a dozen people were treated after white liquid sprays business area, including several firefighters.

NBC Los Angeles – A mysterious chemical mixture burst into flames at a Ventura County waste facility on Tuesday, sending dozens to hospitals for decontamination and emptying homes and businesses for a mile around the plant before the danger eased, authorities said.

A vacuum truck exploded into flames about 3:45 a.m. at the Santa Clara Waste Water Co., spreading about 1,200 gallons of a mysterious waste chemical mixture that contained sulfuric acid and a highly combustible organic peroxide, fire officials said.

"As the liquid began to dry out, the (fire engine) companies on scene noticed that it was very unstable and reactive," Ventura County fire Capt. Mike Lindbery said. "As they stepped on it or tried to move their engine, it would spontaneously ignite under the tire of the engine or their boots."

No burn injuries were reported, but two drivers on a vacuum truck, three firefighters, hospital medical staff and a few nearby residents were washed down or treated for complaints such as breathing problems, red eyes and skin rashes, said Lori Ross, a spokeswoman for the Ventura County Fire Department.
