YES, WE'VE HEARD THEM ALL.
Because we are not meteorologists and to settle much debate over why the National Weather Service out of Boston/Taunton does not cover weather for the Berkshires, FIREGROUND360° was in touch with the professionals who could give you the definitive answer. Please see below.
"Back in 1993, the National Weather Service went through a "modernization". Offices and their areas of responsibility were determined largely by the coverage of the new radars. Based on that, the offices were put in Taunton MA, Gray ME, Albany NY, and Upton NY.
The areas of responsibility were divided based on how far they were from the respective radars. There is better coverage for Berkshire County from the Albany NY radar, and so, the Berkshires are in Albany NY's area of responsibility. Because technology has improved so much in the last 20 or so years, the government is starting to rethink the ramifications of these decisions. However, it will likely take quite a bit of time before any changes are made."
