On April 29, 2015, at approximately 2:00pm the Clarksburg Volunteer Fire Company was dispatched to an area of the Clarksburg State Forest for a reported out of control brush fire.
After determining a more specific location, members of the Clarksburg and Stamford Fire Departments along with Williamstown and Adams Forest Wardens responded to a staging area on Massachusetts Avenue to access the fire. They were assisted by State Department of Conservation, State Forest Fire Control and Director Meranti of North Adams Fire Department, North Adams Ambulance Service was also on scene to assist with firefighter rehab operations. North Adams Fire Department was on stand-by for the incident and was mutual-aid cover assignment for the Town of Clarksburg.
It was determined that the fire was off of the Appalachian Trail in Clarksburg. Initial fire suppression was started, but due to safety concerns of night time operations suppression efforts have been stopped until morning.
There is no reason for concern to the residents of Clarksburg, Williamstown or North Adams as the fire is high on the mountain and is not endangering any residential structures.
During the evening hours residents will be able to see the fire burning and there may be smoke that is detectable in lower lying areas as the climate changes during the night. Emergency crews are monitoring this situation, but again there is no threat to residential structures or residents of the community. We ask that you please close your windows if the smoke becomes bothersome throughout the night.
Beginning at 5:30am responders from ten different agencies will be assisting to extinguish the fire. These agencies will be staging on Massachusetts Avenue, which may cause delays in transportation for residents. We ask all residents to seek an alternate route of travel for their morning commute. If travel is necessary, please reduce your speed in hopes of keeping responders safe.
