Paul Combs is the editorial cartoonist for Fire Engineering Magazine and has published the first-ever collection of his work, Drawn By Fire. Through this collection of 156 fire service editorial cartoons, Combs delivers powerful messages that help everyone remember the seriousness of the job of firefighters and fire officers. “Paul is able to capture the dark and the light sides of what we do and bring them to life in a way that escapes us in words but that resounds in our hearts,” said Chief (Ret.) Bobby Halton, Editor In Chief at Fire Engineering magazine. “It is one of the single greatest honors for Fire Engineering to be able to bring Paul Combs’ insight, integrity, and passion to every firefighter in America.” Using his artistic talent to express his passion for making a difference in the fire service, Paul’s fresh and relevant perspectives touch on a wide range of topics—safety, training, politics, culture, leadership, 9/11—and provide another kind of tool for all firefighters. “It is all about using the tools you have to make an everlasting difference for something you love. This is my passion!” Readers will be inspired and touched by Drawn by Fire, described by Chief Halton as “a gift which will make you smile, make you cry but most of all it will make you think.” In its foreword, Deputy Chief Billy Goldfeder praised the book, writing: “From the most solemn of subjects … to the lighter side of what we do, you will absolutely love this book!”
Paul is a classically trained artist, award-winning illustrator, and firefighter/EMT. That’s right, this unlikely combination has made Paul one of the most compelling and distinctive illustrators in America today. Paul burst onto the scene with a refreshing new style that married classical realism, manic energy, and a zany imagination for caricature. His lavishly detailed illustrations are published worldwide in newspapers, magazines (print and online), and books. His politically charged editorial cartoons are syndicated worldwide by Tribune Media Services/Tribune Content Agency.
In conjunction with his career as an illustrator, Paul is an eighteen-year veteran of the fire service where he is a Firefighter II, NREMT, HazMat Technician, and Instructor for the City of Bryan Fire Training Academy.
