You're probably asking yourself why these? Why not the planes striking the towers or the helpless people falling from their offices high above the New York skyline?
As I watched the coverage days and days after the event, I kept going back to the firefighters making their way up the World Trade Center stairwells. I couldn't fathom, or even imagine what was going through their minds as the event unfolded. I wondered so many things... if they were just focused on their job... if they were scared... did they think about their friends and family... did they know the situation was beyond anything they would ever face... did they know it might be a one way trip?
The images remind me that men and women who responded to this historic incident, that fateful day, had a choice. They all chose the very brave, noble and selfless act to do their job, to the best of their ability, and save people.
Being a first responder is ultimate gift you can give to humanity.
I will never forget.
