December 19th at 6pm, the final tally...

BONDSVILLE 248 | CHESTERFIELD 217 | CHICOPEE S3 53 | CHICOPEE S5 70 | GREENFIELD 1383 | HUBBARDSTON 1229 | PALMER 211 | PHILLIPSTON 287 | SOUTH HADLEY FD #1 28 | TURNERS FALLS 210 | VERNON VT 336 | WARREN 104 | WARWICK 227 | WILBRAHAM 219

Greenfield Fire does it again in the last 60 minutes of the 7th Annual Fire + Light Decoration Contest beating Hubbardston Fire by 154 votes.

Firefighter Bill Kimball jokes it was Greenfield's famous hat trick, but after seeing the display in person clearly it was a lot of hard work and effort on everyone's part.

Luckily we were able to get a few photos in between runs!

It wouldn't feel like Christmas if we weren't at a firehouse somewhere, it's something we really look forward to each year. If we are able to spend 10 or 15 minutes with the crew before they go out on their next call, we feel pretty lucky.

This year we made a repeat visit to our friends in Greenfield, winners of the 6th Annual Fire + Lights Decoration Contest.

As we pulled in the lot, the guys were just getting back from a medical. We got to work right away, quickly taking a group photo and getting the food setup inside. No sooner than talking about how close the race was, they were dispatched to another call.

It was a busy night for fire departments in Franklin County, including a structure fire in Turners Falls. Greenfield was one of the many crews who responded mutual aid. A vehicle fire, more medicals and a smoke in the building run, needless to say it was non-stop.

While most of us are able to enjoy the holiday please take a moment to remember our first responders out there keeping us safe.

A huge thank you to the members of the FG360 community for getting the word out on social media and taking the time to vote.

A special thank you to all the participating departments and Operation Christmas Spirit Sponsors LashCo Tree Service and Quality Cleaning and Restoration. It was the largest contest to date and you truly brought Christmas spirit to Western Mass!

Congratulations once again to the Greenfield Fire Department on your win two years in a row!

No time for dinner

Every year we've been pretty lucky to be able to visit with the guys, setup dinner, and take a quick photo, but this year was a little different. Paula and I arrived at Greenfield Fire Department Christmas Eve to deliver the Fire + Lights winner's dinner only to find an empty station. We know the drill all to well.

Shortly after they returned, we no sooner brought in all the food and prizes inside, when they were dispatched to another call.

Paula and I stayed behind to set things up and the station was eerily quiet. The tree was lit, the rec room empty, a cup of coffee and half-eaten cookie was all that was left.

In the short time we were there the guys had three back to back calls with an invest
, suspicious package and a two car motor vehicle accident. This left just enough time for a group photo and to scarf down some wings before heading out on three more medicals.

This is life at the firehouse on Christmas Eve.

Montague Center Fire Department Unveils New Engine

FIREGROUND360° – It was snowin' and the wind was blowin', but that didn't stop Montague residents from stopping by their local fire department to catch a peek of its newest addition. Montague Center Fire Department proudly unveiled 25-Engine 1 Saturday and we were lucky enough to have a hands-on tour!

The truck was acquired from broker, Brindlee Mountain Fire. It was the culmination of several months of hard work and dedication by nine committee members. Last summer select members made the trip south to Union Grove Alabama to run and test the equipment before making the purchase.

The truck is a 2013 Spartan Chasis that seats six, with a 1000 gal tank and 1500 gpm pump. It is outfitted with a 380 hp Cummins Engine and Allison Automatic Transmission. It was slightly used and never put into service.  The apparatus has only 3500 miles and 9 hours on the pump.

Firefighters have been training on the pump and will soon start driver training before the engine goes into service. Once in service it will be the first responding piece of equipment out the door.

During the open house, other pieces of apparatus were on also display, as well as, preparedness materials, historical department photos, and a children's raffle. Hot refreshments and pastry were much appreciated on the chilly wintry day.

Montague Center Fire Department was incorporated in 1941, currently has 30 members and is 100% volunteer.

Hatfield, MA Mock Prom Demo 2014

Recently, our hometown department held their yearly mock prom demo illustrating the dangers of drinking and driving. Each time we cover this event, we are always in awe of the professionalism of the first responders and the REAL message it sends to the students, many of which who are seeing a motor vehicle crash, up close, and for the first time.

Along with photos, we captured a little video. Still photography will always be our passion, but video really tells the story here.

Another incredible event with an amazing group of people!  We had the lucky opportunity to be embedded with the river safety crews keeping a watchful eye on the hundreds of participants competing in the River Rat Race. So much coordination goes into this event and the river safety teams never disappoint.  Special thanks to Chief Lozier for your patience and letting us be part of it all!
