I was able to stop by the Easthampton Fire Department on Payson Avenue this past Saturday to take in their open house festivities and to shoot some photos there. The event also coincided with the town’s “Art Walk” events, so most of the downtown area was pretty lively for the late afternoon and evening. The firehouse had all the bay doors open and many of the trucks outside for the day, and visitors could tour the firehouse and climb up into the vehicles, especially thrilling for the little ones in the crowds.
Every child that I saw during my visit had their own fire helmet to take home, along with coloring books from the firehouse. Smokey the Bear was rumored to have made an appearance, but I didn't spot him when I was there-perhaps he was getting ready to sleep for the coming winter. However, there were quite a few on and off duty firefighters on hand in order to answer questions from visitors and talk about the firehouse. An added bonus during my visit was a live jazz band performance by The Bowties, the musicians all members of the high school right here in town. By the way, they sounded fantastic, I would keep an eye out for these musicians in the future if you are from the area.
